How you can avoid slips, trips and falls

Injuries from falling can happen almost anywhere, including sidewalks, stores, apartment complexes and office buildings. Property owners have a duty to keep these areas free of hazards so you do not suffer injuries. Sadly, falls are common and result in over 8 million visits to the emergency rooms every year.

While property owners and managers must keep their premises safe, you can take note of some preparations and precautions to stay as safe as possible. Here are some tips to avoid slips, trips and falls.

Recognize slip hazards

Slippery and wet surfaces are often present in parking lots, sidewalks, food preparation areas and indoor floors. Keep an eye out for puddles, oil spills, wet floor signs and mopping equipment. Be especially cautious when it rains or shows – outdoor conditions can change considerably, and people can track moisture into indoor environments too.

Identify trip risks

There are many obstacles, defects and conditions that can cause you to trip:

  • Electrical cords and wires
  • Clutter and debris in hallways and walkways
  • Floor damage and irregularities, such as cracks or sudden changes in surfaces
  • Loose mats, floor runners or carpeting
  • Lack of handrails on staircases
  • Inadequate lighting

Document the condition that caused the fall

If you or a loved one suffer an injury in a fall, try to document the condition that caused the fall. A picture (or 10) is worth a thousand words when trying to prove that a property caused a dangerous condition.

Wear good footwear

The shoes you wear play a major role in how safe you are from falls. Avoid shoes with stick soles, open toes and loose shoelaces to help avoid falls. Opt. for footwear with slip resistant features.
