Avoiding drunk drivers this holiday season

There is no shortage of festivities, good cheer, and alcohol during the holiday season. Whether or not you plan to consume alcohol at any events you attend, do not overlook your safety on the roads. It is common for traffic and dangerous road conditions to increase, and for more people to drive while impaired.

To keep yourself and loved ones from becoming a crash, injury, or fatality statistic, take the following precautions to stay safe on the road.

Use seatbelts

Seatbelts are more than a legal requirement—they are a safety feature that saves lives. Many people die from automobile collisions because they were not wearing their seatbelts. Seatbelts help keep you secure and can prevent severe and potentially life-threatening injuries. You should never start your vehicle until everyone inside it is properly buckled up.

Establish a curfew

The majority of drunk driving collisions occur late at night and early in the morning. The longer you stay out, the more likely you are to share the roads with intoxicated drivers. Prioritize safety over fun, and give yourself a personal curfew to be home and off the streets.

Anticipate road conditions

Winter roads can be slippery from snow and ice accumulation. Prior to traveling, check the weather to give yourself an idea of what the roads may be like. Consider leaving early or later from your holiday gatherings to minimize the time you have to spend driving on slippery roads.

Travel at a safe distance

The less space between your car and the cars around you, the less time you have to react and avoid a potential crash. Always allow enough space to enable you to come to a complete, safe stop — that means at least three seconds away, or several car lengths between you and the car in front of you. While you cannot control what the cars behind you do, giving yourself plenty of driving distance from the car in front gives drivers behind you have more time to avoid crashing into you.

Put away the distractions and cellphones and focus on navigating your vehicle defensively and safely. Be sure to have a car accident contingency plan, just in case.

If you are injured during the holiday season due to another driver’s negligence, it is smart to enlist the help of a personal injury lawyer who can maximize the amount you recover. There is no charge and no obligation to Klampe Law Firm when you call. We represent injured people on a contingency fee basis, so you only pay us if you win. It makes sense to get us involved early.
