3 Unique Dangers of Driving at Night

Some people love driving at night because there is less traffic, but others dislike it because it is harder to see at night. Driving after sundown presents unique dangers. According to the National Safety Council, you are three times more likely to be in a fatal accident at night than during the day.

Why is driving in the dark so dangerous? Here are some reasons why you are more likely to be in a collision when you drive at night.

1. Reduced visibility

The main reason night driving is uniquely risky is that it is more difficult to see. With less light, and perhaps glare from oncoming traffic, drivers have more trouble seeing other cars, road signs, pedestrians and animals. Darkness also makes it more difficult to gauge distance between your vehicle and other objects. To accommodate for decreased vision, slow down and leave more space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

2. Fatigue

Drowsy driving is a significant hazard of nighttime driving. Many people drive home after working long hours or not getting enough sleep the night before. If a motorist dozes off while on the road, he or she may crash into you. Always expect the unexpected when driving at night.

3. Impairment

People drive after consuming alcohol or drugs more often at night than during the day. The higher number of drunk or drugged drivers on the road at night results in a higher risk of getting in an accident. Weekend nights are especially dangerous because more drivers are under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Make sure you drive defensively and stay alert to be as safe as possible around impaired drivers.

It is important to always be aware of the challenges of driving at night.
